Depression - symptoms
Recognise the symptoms
of depression and take prompt action to overcome it.
People sometimes ask
about the signs of depression. In a way it doesn’t matter whether
you’ve got the symptoms; if you’re unhappy then it’s
time to do something about it.
Common symptoms
of depression:
• Waking up
feeling exhausted
• An interrupted sleep pattern, often with vivid, unsettling
dreams
• Early waking in the morning, and having trouble getting
back to sleep
• Difficulty concentrating
• Lacking motivation to do things you used to enjoy
• Self-absorption and rumination – worrying, anxiety
and sometimes obsessional thinking
• Becoming upset, sometimes tearful for no reason
• Short temper, feeling irritable.

Depression
tends to make people:
• Have very
black and white (all or nothing) thinking, for example, thinking
that ‘ everything will be perfect when I Iose weight/get
a job/find a partner
• ‘Catastrophize’
Misusing the imagination, thinking that the worst possible
outcome will happen and that normal, everyday things
that go wrong are a catastrophe
• Blame themselves
for things going wrong
• Ruminate –
spending a lot of time cogitating on sad things, or things
that make them feel bad
Some people will have only some of the above signs of feeling depressed,
and some people may have other symptoms.
Read on to find out
about how depression works and the
cycle of depression.
